The dressing of the forming grinding wheel mainly has two forms: a diamond pen and a diamond wheel. The diamond pen has a simple trimming structure and a low cost, and theoretically, a higher dressing precision can be obtained. Because the diamond pen is seriously worn, the life is short, the wear amount is difficult to estimate, and it can not be accurately compensated, resulting in poor consistency of sand profile shape, which has great influence on the grinding process of large gears, and is gradually replaced by diamond roller dressing. The diamond roller has high rigidity, large dressing and high efficiency. It adopts the path envelope method, which is more suitable for trimming complex forming surfaces. The method of dressing the grinding wheel by the diamond wheel is divided into a plunge-type roller dressing and a swinging wheel dressing.

Plunge roller trimming
 
    When the plunging roller is used for trimming, the diamond roller rotates at a high speed under the driving of the trimming motor, and performs a plunging motion along the radial direction of the grinding wheel. In order to trim the forming surface, the diamond roller and the grinding wheel move relative to each other in the axial direction. As shown in Fig. 2, when the forming grinding wheel is trimmed, the dressing roller and the grinding wheel are rotated around the center of their own rotation at a certain line speed ratio. The grinding wheel reciprocates along its own axis (Y axis), and the dressing roller follows the axial movement of the grinding wheel in a certain proportional relationship along its radial direction (W axis). The Y-axis and the W-axis are interpolated to take an arc or a straight line, and the diamond roller R-circle is a center-shaped equidistant line. The wheel is intercepted by the contact point of the roller and the grinding wheel.
 
Swing wheel dressing
 
    The oscillating diamond wheel trimming structure is relatively complicated, and it is necessary to realize five actions: grinding wheel rotation, diamond wheel rotation, diamond wheel swing, roller and grinding wheel offset, trimming feed. With this method, the section of the diamond wheel is always in the normal section of the sand profile, and the dressing wheel only uses a point on the arc of the diamond wheel R, similar to the use of a diamond tip to trim the wheel.
 
Standard finishing device
 
    The polar coordinate trimming device combines the characteristics of the plunge trimming and the oscillating rest. The numerical control system controls the plane motion enveloping grinding wheel shaft truncation curve of the diamond roller in the polar coordinate system to realize the grinding wheel forming and trimming. When dressing the grinding wheel, the dressing roller and the grinding wheel rotate around the center of their own rotation at a certain line speed ratio. The grinding wheel oscillates around the center of the swing, and the dressing roller moves linearly along the radial direction of the grinding wheel. The cross section of the grinding wheel is trimmed into a shape adapted to the tooth groove of the gear to be ground by linear interpolation of the linear axis and the rotary shaft.
