Reasonable selection of grinding wheel is one of the key factors to ensure the quality of tool grinding. Diamond grinding wheels should be used for grinding hard alloy saw blades. The performance indicators of diamond grinding wheels include abrasive particle size, bond type, grinding wheel hardness, grinding wheel organization, grinding wheel shape, grinding wheel size, diamond concentration, diamond material layer thickness, and material layer width.
The abrasive of diamond (JR) grinding wheel is a synthetic diamond synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions using graphite as raw material under the action of a catalyst. Its main component is carbon (C), which has several colors such as colorless transparency, light yellow, yellow green, and black. Artificial diamond abrasive has a relatively high hardness and is currently commonly used for grinding hard alloy cutting tools. Compared with silicon carbide, it has a grinding productivity of 5 times higher, a roughness of 1-3 levels higher, and a tool durability of 1-3 times higher. Diamond grinding wheels are expensive, have poor toughness, strong affinity for iron group elements, and poor thermal stability. When the temperature reaches 700-800 ℃ in an air medium, they will graphitize, so they cannot be used for grinding steel tools.
Diamond grinding wheels are expensive, so they only consist of diamond and binder in the working part of the grinding wheel to form an abrasive layer. The thickness of the material layer is usually only 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, and 5mm. The particle size standard of diamond grinding wheels is the same as that of ordinary grinding wheels. When grinding hard alloy serrations, the particle size is generally selected to be 80-120 #, and the hardness of the grinding wheel is intermediate. The concentration of diamond grinding wheel refers to the mass of diamond per unit volume in the material layer, with a standard value of 0.879g (4.39 carats)/cm3 and a concentration of 100%. When grinding hard alloy serrated blades, two types of concentration are generally selected: 50% or 100%. Table 1 shows the shapes and codes of commonly used diamond grinding wheels. There are four types of binders used for diamond grinding wheels: bronze (Q), resin (S), ceramic (A), and electroplating (D). When dry grinding, resin bonded diamond grinding wheels are generally used, and when wet grinding with coolant, bronze bonded diamond grinding wheels are used.
The marking sequence of diamond grinding wheels is: abrasive - particle size - hardness - binder - concentration - shape - size. The dimension annotation method is: outer diameter × thickness × aperture × Diamond ring width × Material layer thickness × Angle. For example, the symbol of a diamond grinding wheel with an artificial diamond particle size of 100 #, medium hardness, resin bond, concentration of 50%, disc shaped No.1 grinding wheel, outer diameter of 80mm, thickness of 13mm, aperture of 20mm, material ring width of 3mm, and material layer thickness of 3mm is JR100 # Z50D180 × thirteen × twenty × three × 3.
Before using the grinding wheel, it is necessary to check for gaps, coaxiality, vibration, and surface cleanliness. When grinding hard alloy saw blades with diamond grinding wheels, they should not come into contact with the saw blade body of tool steel materials, otherwise the grinding wheel will be blocked. The saw blade body of tool steel materials should be ground using a grinding wheel with corundum or silicon carbide as the abrasive.
Due to the high hardness of hard alloys, high grinding pressure is required during grinding, and due to their small thermal conductivity, excessive heat generation is not allowed. Therefore, it is required to have good cooling and heat dissipation conditions during grinding, and cooling liquid is usually used to reduce the occurrence of grinding cracks. Using Diamond
